HISTORIC BRICK EXTERIOR TUCKPOINTING

Kalorama, DC, 2021

Tuckpointing is the delicate art of grinding out the old chalky failing mortar from between bricks and replacing it with new mortar. If left in the wrong hands, faulty tuckpointing can destroy your historic brick forever, so choosing a licensed and experienced tuckpointing masonry contractor is key.

For this tuckpointing project in the Washington DC neighborhood of Kalorama, we erected scaffolding and meticulously hand-grinded each mortar joint, taking care not to damage the historic brick. Then we filled the mortar joints with mortar graded for use with historic brick and in a custom color chosen to match the existing mortar between the bricks around the residence, and smoothed the joints to give them an aesthetically pleasing and uniform appearance.
